Process Not Performance: Let Go of Your Problems

November 2025

Workshop Updates

Manchester

Lloyd Eyre-Morgan joined George for both days in Manchester and led a fantastic workshop to round off our in-persons for 2025. Actors worked from a specially written script for CMA and a scene from Lloyd’s feature film Departures. His directing style involves lots of creativity and improvisation around the text - a gift for actors. Everyone shared their work with Lloyd and received feedback before implementing notes. On day two he brought his camera equipment with him and the drama studio became a set! Thanks to all who attended and a huge thanks to all of our Manchester actors this year. We appreciate you.

Looking ahead to January 2026 (whaaaat?!) and the brilliant Juliet Charlesworth. Spaces went very quickly so this is waiting list only. Please let us know if you’d like to join - just make sure you are available for the dates.

London

Lloyd also joined us in London and treated us to a hilarious set of improvisations around the themes of the scenes. It quickly descended into absolute chaos but what struck me was how free and playful everyone was. This is a credit to Lloyd, who set up a space where his positivity and enthusiasm infected everybody else and allowed for full creative freedom.

On day two we worked through our toughest circuit training yet before tackling camera circuits for the very first time - 4 stations, 8 minutes per station - cheating the frame, inner monologue, actions and eyelines/hitting marks. Quick fire screen technique adaptations depending on the exercise. Text work and scene sharing in BCU rounded out the day brilliantly. Thank you to everyone who attended, you earned that drink! And a huge thank you to all of our London actors who have worked with us over the past year.

Sheraz Ahmed (Happy Valley, Time, All Creatures Great and Small, Hardacres) will be here in London for both days in January. In even bigger news GEORGE will be back down too. Me, George AND Sheraz. What more could you want?! We will be working on an original film script Sheraz is casting and you will get the opportunity to submit a comedy self-tape for feedback!

The CMA 360: From All Angles took place every Thursday evening on Zoom in November. Claire Tailyour, Alex Priestley, Christopher Eccleston and Sheraz Ahmed all provided some fantastic insights. I am going to put together the key learnings and include them in my next journal article.

My Ideas

*

Acting provides us with an opportunity to let go of all of our problems for a while. If you are completely immersed in somebody else’s life then there’s no space for yours.

**

If there’s something you feel passionate about and consuming news about it affects you negatively, see if you feel passionate enough about it to go and make a significant difference or contribution. If you find that there isn’t anything, drop it from your thinking. You aren’t the person to solve that issue. Leave it to the experts and stop losing sleep.

Self-tape HACK - angle your left shoulder towards camera. It just looks better. Reason? We read from left to right.

Podcast recommendation: Bugzy Malone on Modern Wisdom. FASCINATING guy.

Insights

*

Barbara Streisand on being on stage:

“I was calmer on stage. I could take my time and the audience had to adjust to my pace.”

**

Chris Eccleston on auditioning (from the CMA 360):

“Make sure you know it inside out. And have something private you are trying to achieve in an audition. Then you’ll forget about all the eyes on you.”

***

Mary Kay Ash on making others feel important:

“Whenever I meet someone, I try to imagine him or her wearing an invisible sign that says: MAKE ME FEEL IMPORTANT! I respond to this sign immediately, and it works wonders.”
