Process Not Performance: An Actor’s Nakedness
July 2025
Workshop Updates
Manchester & London
George and I have been enjoying the summer break—but of course, we are missing being in the room with you all. We're gearing up for our September return, with Isher Sahota leading sessions in both cities. We joined him on Saturday in London for the first ever table read of a new film script he is directing, alongside a brilliant group of actors, writers, casting directors, agents, and other creatives.
It’s the very script we’ll be workshopping in September—and trust me, it’s a cracker. All I can say for now is it’s a revenge thriller. Just a heads up: everyone attending will need to sign an NDA beforehand.
Both Manchester and London are now sold out. If you would like to join the waiting list, let us know below. We normally do have some cancellations so chances are you will get a place if you get in quick.

Online
Our online course begins on next Wednesday. We will be working from a script from one of my favorite ever TV series, with one of the best screen performances I have ever seen. Can’t wait to wax lyrical and work with the 12 actors booked on. Get those non-verbal reactions polished and ready!

My Ideas
*
I have been reading and learning a lot about the advances of AI. My view is you have to move with the times. Get to grips with it as much as you can. Use it to your advantage. Don’t get left behind. Would love to discuss - let me know your experiences and how you are feeling about it all.

The industry has been turbulent for a long time. Trust me when I say not a lot of actors out there are working regularly right now. Try not to panic. Get comfortable with life and keep your eye in. Read, watch, stay in touch, keep up to date with what is going on. You don’t want to look back on this time with regret at being too concerned with the future. Stay present.

Insights
*
“Nevertheless for the thousandth time Sam was shocked by the extent of an actor’s nakedness. Richard was revealing things about himself that had nothing to do with the play. It seemed too soon after breakfast. As he acted, he had gone first a waxy pallor; then a deep flushing had overcome his neck and ears. With the text out of his hands for the first time his movements traced out a graph of painful inhibition. He was a sufficiently experienced actor to hide most of his discomfort, but there was an irreducible minimum of insecurity against which he had no protection, and never would have, particularly under the gaze of people like other actors who understood it.”
Next Season by Michael Blakemore

Keith Johnstone on contrariness:
“At about the age of nine I decided never to believe anything because it was convenient. I began reversing every statement to see if the opposite was also true. This is so much a habit with me that I hardly notice I’m doing it any more. As soon as you put a ‘not’ into an assertion, a whole range of other possibilities opens out - especially in drama, where everything is supposition anyway.”

Brad DeLong on making books your friends:
“Treat your books as people, not objects.”
